We all know that it's important to eat lots of vegetables, fruit, whole grains & lean protein. At the same time, it's just as important to avoid or limit foods that contain unhealthy ingredients.
We need to read food labels and ingredient lists carefully. But, it's also important to know what to look for. One great rule of thumb: if you can't pronounce it, it's probably bad for you!
Here's a partial list of some of the ingredients you should avoid:
• Artificial colors
• Artificial flavorings
• Artificial sweeteners
• Fat replacements
• MSG
• Hydrogenated oil
• Sodium nitrite
• Brominated oil (added to some carbonated drinks)

If you buy foods with toxic ingredients, you are literally poisoning yourself & your family! Which other ingredients do you watch out for?
After watching the documentary "Food, Inc." I have made an effort to buy more raw & organic foods. Michael Pollan who is featured in the documentary "Food, Inc." was on Oprah a couple of weeks ago. It was a very eye opening show and he shared some great tips for healthy eating. Some his guidelines for good eating included: 1. Don't eat anything your great-grandmother wouldn't recognize as food. 2. Avoid food products containing ingredients that a third-grader cannot pronounce. 3. Eat only foods that will eventually rot.
ReplyDeleteGood points Gayane! Michael Pollan is great. He also has a new book out called "Food Rules" that simplifies everything he's written in his other books. It's fun & easy to read, but makes a lot of important points.
